AMY ELLEN SCHWARTZ is a Professor of Public Policy, Education and Economics at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service and Steinhardt School of Education and the Director of the Institute for Education and Social Policy. She is an empirical microeconomist, focusing on issues in public finance, urban economics, and the economics of education. Current research projects include a longitudinal study of the educational performance and attainment of immigrant students, an investigation of the causes and consequences of school funding differentials, and the relationship between public policies and community economic development. Prior to joining the faculty at NYU, she was an assistant professor of economics at Tufts University (1988-1992). She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1989 and her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1983. She currently serves as the president-elect of the American Education Finance Association and as a member of the editorial board of Education Finance and Policy. She has served as a consultant to a variety of public and not-for-profit organizations. Recent examples include the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Campaign for Fiscal Equity. Her work has been published in numerous academic journals, she is the editor of City Taxes, City Spending: Essays in Honor of Dick Netzer and co-editor of Measuring School Performance and Efficiency.
